Lamb of God – Wrath

Lamb of God – Wrath
Epic Records
Rating:

Wrath is the fifth studio album from Richmond, Virginias Lamb Of God, and I must say, I was excited to get my hands on it.
When I first popped in this album, I was surprised at what I heard. A melodic, semi-acoustic, two minute interlude. Not the typical way a Lamb of God album starts. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The second track kicked in, and my faith was renewed. “In your words” is the first real song on the album and has the classic formula that LoG fans have some to love and expect.
Track 3, Set to fail, has a sweet guitar solo in the middle of the song and a nice constant groove. Over all its a good song if you are into groovy metal riffs and southern sounding metal. That’s how most of this album is.
Overall this album is faster then what I was expecting. It’s pretty thrashy at points, which is cool. I’m into it. Track 4, “Contractor”, is a good example of this.
The best track of the album in my opinion is the last track, “Reclamation”, an epic 7 minute song that opens with the sound of rain, the ocean, and an acoustic guitar. my first response was “Am I still listening to Lamb of God?”. After the soft stuff passed, a wall off sound slapped me in the face. Possibly the heaviest thing on the album. The track has some talking parts which instantly make me think of Phil Anselmo, but hey, LoG is the new Pantera, so it’s to be expected… maybe that’s why I like it so much. 3:30 seconds into the song LoG finally unveils what I have been waiting for, a musical a moment that would be fitting for the earth to be destroyed at. This song feels the most raw and passionate, I wish the whole album was like this, it doesn’t feel produced or planned like the other songs do.
In a recent press release the band stated that this album would surprise a lot of people. Maybe they were talking about the acoustic stuff because the band sounds a lot like they did on the last album, Sacrament. I can’t really tell what the surprise is.
As the band has progressed over the years they have become more and more polished. This album seems polished to the point that they rough and rawness that made their previous albums like “New American Gospel” so great, just isn’t there anymore.
The songs on this album are heavy at points but for the most part they are large and sweeping. When I picture the crowd at a LoG show while they play most of these songs, I just see people standing there and staring. When I listen to Lamb Of God I want to imagine people running for their life because they think the world is ending. I miss the huge earth shattering riffs and break downs that were present on their first two albums. If you loved “Sacrament” then you will like this album. If you are more fans of “New American Gospel”, you won’t like this as much, but it’s still good, don’t get me wrong.
Overall the album is very produced, but not over produced. The mix is very polished and clean, but I feel it’s to clean for Lamb of God. The vocals and instrument playing are spot on, and sound great, but the raw emotion wasn’t there for me to keep coming back to this album. If you thought Lamb of God was boring and repetitive, this album won’t change your mind.
Bottom Line: If you thought “Sacrament” ruled, you will love this album. If not, you most likely wont love this.

Here is a youtube video that I found that have 30 seconds from each song on the new album. (
*note* the first song is their OLD stuff, you can compare the old vs new)
Before i start, let me just say that i am a hardcore log fan and think that ashes of the wake was the all around greatest metal record ever recorded. after i heard that cd, i thought that lamb of god had taken the place of slayer as the greatest metal band of all time. I liked sacrament but i didnt think it was as good as ashes. however, it scared me that lamb of god themselves thought it was so great as to be there best. I still dont think that log knows what they did with ashes. i think they just dont know. I respect chris adler alot and when he said that they had topped themselves on wrath and that “it needs no hype and you will feel it” i was excited. I believed chris. but after i heard wrath i felt lied to. i think he was just trying to hype it up by saying that. this album gets a 4 out of 10. and on the lamb of god scale, it was the worst. it is the absolute worst thrown together piece of experimental garbage put out to make a few dollars i have heard from anyone that is a top metal band. I think it is comparable to metallicas load. there is no aggression whatsoever. which is what metal is about and what lamb of god captured perfectly in ashes of the wake. Its almost like two completely different bands. this is probably all mark mortons fault and his pushing to be be more creative and not caring what the fans want. he actually said that in the dvd. he said they always want it to sound like the last one. and no i dont. i could live with another sacrament but i want another ashes of the wake. and by the way what the hell is the first song the passing? is that metal? i would expect that from pantera of metallica but not these guys. and yes i said it pantera is extremely overated. the passing is just these guys trying to pass time and do something different. well typically metal bands that do things different after breaking out so strong just fall out. these guys will fall out after about two more albums if they dont wake the fuck up. there is no edgeyness in the entrirety of the album. and lamb of god knows how to do it so well it just amazes me that they have let themselves listen to whoever is telling them to get away from what they do. randy has even lost the edge to his voice. chris said that the drums would be the best yet. well i think anything he bangs out is good but theres nothing exciting here. sacrament was actually the best drum album. the guitars just sludge over eachother and there are not any good chord changes at all. i think they tried to make another sacrament. what they should have done is another ashes. they should all just start fighting and then write that seems to work out. this album is an absolute disgrace to metal and to themselves. but because of their previous work they are still one of my favorites but they just proved they are no match for slayer. do you think slayer became the best metal band ever by being creative and trying new things? no they play pure metal. not this neo metal bullshit log tried to pull off. maybe they should listen to slayer. did they think people would respect them more for doing something different? slayer is the most respected band ever and theyve been doing the same thing for 20 years. lamb of god has it inside them to be the best but this album has taken a turn for diseaster. good luck boys.
First off, Elliot has no idea what metal is. Metal is a form of classical music, played aggressively. Of course this album is metal *DUH* I also think this is BY FAR the best metal album ever recorded. Ashes of the Wake is a second for me.
The drum patterns speak for themselves, they are amazing and much more complex than any other LOG album. The guitar solo’s are incredible, and the verse riffs are much catchier than most of their others. How can you argue against that after listening to the solo in ‘Grace’. Randy has a huge improvement in his singing abilities and it shows with this album. The bass is hard and tight, Campbell kick ass as always.
Anyone who pops in this album and expects ‘Ashes of the Wake’ is going to be disappointed, BECAUSE IT’S NOT. If you want to listen to that album, do it.
This album has more than satisfied my craving for another LOG album….and I still listen to it daily.
Elliot – Comparing this album to ‘Load’ just shows your a moron LOL.
