Underoath calls Avenged Sevenfold “a gimmick”
In the latest Metalhammer, Underoath shared some choice words for popular punk/glam metal act Avenged Sevenfold.
Guitarist Tim McTague explained:
What’s popular, to a degree, is what pushed me to find something that isn’t popular for Underoath. Chiodos or Escape The Fate who do kind of the same thing – screaming and singing and whatever – do it their way, so we’re like, ‘let’s do it completely the opposite’ because we don’t want to be associated with them.
People might associate us with Avenged Sevenfold because they’re pissed Republicans and ’so metal’, but they’re a gimmick, they’re a circus. They can’t play and they can’t write a song. What’s worse is the way they look.
If you need to have make-up and crappy names like Synyster Gates to sell records, then you shouldn’t be here. That’s not rock’n'roll to me. Arena rock maybe, but not real rock’n'roll. If you’re basing yourself on how cool you are or how many girls you can trick into thinking your band is cool you can just… take that home.

I’m not really into them, but I think Underoath has always been a band that can be respected for continuously reinventing their sound.

Avenged Sevenfold would fuck up Underoath in a real fight any day. Matt alone can fuck up the singer and the small guitar player by himself…easily!!

Hahahaha! No doubt, that fight would suck for Underoath. But, I just think it’s funny that they’d actually open their mouths…especially considering what they used to be. I guess when you’re big you can just do whatever you like.
One other thing: the guys from Terror somehow (by rumor) have Underoath’s back…so that would bring a whole new spin on things.

Why would they fight in real life. Its gonna be like every other band fight where theyre gonna share some heated words. Me personally i think its true. UnderØath is true to themselves and the people that listen to their music. To SS i dont see how UnderØath looks emo when youve got avenged sevenfold lookin like a bunch of faggots with makeup.

Underoath does the “completel opposite of what is popular?” What? They are Christian Emo. CHRISTIAN. and EMO!! Those are the biggest trends of all time.
Plus, gimmicks and girls and nicknames have ALWAYS been a part of rock ‘n’ roll. Just ask Led Zeppelin and Elvis how many women they convinced their music was cool and how much make-up and strange clothes for appearance they wore.
if they are a gimmick then so are queen? iron maiden? judas preist? all these bands had hooks and gimmicks tht attract ppl in the first place to like theyre music bt thts the thing avenged sevenfold are much better band musicaly than underoath.

Yeah…Where’s Underoath now? I can’t remember the last time I have heard their name or seen them on TV. This was a lame attempt paired with their slur towards Metallica at trying to make some controversy so that their band can get some extra fans. Must not have worked out too well based on the fact that you never really hear about them anymore. It’s even more amazing that these people call out other bands for being “fake” when they wear clothes from Hot Topic which is the biggest example of “fake”. Maybe instead of flaming other bands that are actually great in their own ways, this band should focus on getting back in the spotlight again. Stop the shit talking, and make some actual good music.
at least avenged sevenfold doesn’t have to preach about god to get fans.

i’ve never really listened to underoath, but what ive heard is basic christian emo wank. and they’re having a go at A7X saying that all they play for is money, and to get girls. all of the band are engaged, married, or in very commited relationships. and do they really need any more money than they’ve already got?? they are all about connecting with fans. i’m not into that kind of music, i really don’t like metal to be honest. but A7X have had a special place with me for a long time, and i repect how they’ve dealt with everything that’s come their way. one band shouldn’t have a go at another band just for doing things different to how they do. Underoath have no repect from me. A7X for life.
